This Week In Doctor Who - February 16, 2005

THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO
February 16, 2005 - Vol 8, No 7
The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide.
by Benjamin F. Elliott
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho
26 March 2005 - 7PM (or 6:45PM) - BBC One - Doctor Who. For months
this has been the most rumoured premiere date for the series. But we
also know that the BBC would not finalize their schedule until late
in the day. This week credible sources began to leak a document from
BBC marketing. The document gave the premiere date and time,
information on the trailers, and lots of press plans including radio
interviews and posters. 8 March looks rather busy. I'll wait for an
official BBC release to post the details (as plans can change). The
premiere date and time are still not official or confirmed, but the
evidence from leaks has approached the point of overwhelming. Expect
Doctor Who on BBC One on 26 March, the day before Easter, and the
evening before clocks get moved ahead in the UK to Daylight Savings
Time.
New Zealand's Prime TV http://www.primetv.co.nz will not be airing Doctor Who Confidential, if recent reports on the Tetrap page http://nzdwfc.tetrap.com are correct. Looks like Prime is on course for a "mid-year" premiere of Doctor Who. No repeats of the original series in the lead-up period.
CBC TV http://www.cbc.ca/television will air Doctor Who in Canada.
Right now we know that they have the rights to air Doctor Who
beginning March 1, but cannot air an episode till after it premieres
on BBC One. Normally CBC focuses heavily on the National Hockey
League http://www.nhl.com from April through June for the playoffs
and Stanley Cup. The 2004/2005 season has yet to premiere - a
dispute between the players and team owners has kept the main hockey
league shuttered all season. A press conference is scheduled for
today, February 16, at 1PM Eastern. Unless a deal is reached, the
season is expected to be cancelled at that time, which would 1) be
very sad for the long-suffering hockey fans who have been caught in
the middle and 2) leave a lot of holes on CBC TV's spring schedule.
The CBC has an extensive (if tentative) future schedule on their
site. Click on listings and work through it to find their
information for the next few months. Doctor Who is not on there as
of this writing.
There's an increase of rumors this week about Doctor Who sales.
Probably we'll get some confirmations at the Showcase (don't have
link handy - sorry) press event later this month. The US, Australia,
and "European Countries" have all been rumored this week. (Not the
first time rumors have surfaced about the US and Australia.) If
anything becomes confirmed I'll send out an update.
Iowa Public TV http://www.iptv.org has alerted the Unit-1 Doctor Who fan group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/unit-1 that they will not be pledging Doctor Who or Red Dwarf this March during their "Festival" programming (normally they do, with Unit-1 showing up to help out). This is not a surprise, as public TV stations have been losing the rights to air Doctor Who with short notice - trying to get members to give money to keep Doctor Who on the air when they could lose it in short order would not be good for public relations. As of this writing, Iowa Public TV has not reported losing the rights to Doctor Who.
